Welcome to Durban Writes! Durban Writes is a month long fundraising event where writers and would be writers pluck up their courage and pens in support of litteracy. Participants sign up to write a 50,000 word novella over the month of November, and raise money through donations in support of their efforts. All funds raised will be donated to local, disadvantaged schools for the purchasing of books and other literacy education supplies.
Organized by the Durban Rotaract Club, Durban Writes is a unique fundraiser, designed to raise money for literacy through participation. Writers can be any age and background, and may write in any language. The writing must be a work of fiction, and may not be the continuation of a "half-finished" story. At the end of the month, writers keep their books (they don't have to share them with anyone), and the money raised will be donated with the help of local Rotary clubs. Durban Writes is working off the NaNoWriMo platform, and will rely on their word counter for verification of 50,000 words written.
Often people will contribute to their communities by participating in a race, a marathon, a walk-a-thon, or a fast, and ask their friends and family to help by sponsoring them. The point is to raise money and to challenge yourself to do something difficult and rewarding. If you've ever tried to write a book, you'll know how challenging and exciting it can be! We can't think of a better way to promote literacy and the love of words than by raising money for literacy by writing!
If you are interested in writing with us, please contact us at durbanwrites@gmail.com. You don't need any experience, or even a plot. We'll walk you through it step by step, and help you get a book written. If you've ever wanted to try your hand at writing, but never quite got around to it, this is the time. There's never been a better reason to get writing! So send us an email and tell all your friends! Write for literacy today!
